Loom Alternative for Mac: Private, Local-First, Pay Once

A Mac menu bar recorder for client videos: your library stays on your Mac, the link is in your clipboard when you press stop, and the shared copy is deleted when the link expires.

Updated 5 November 2026

If you want a Loom alternative for Mac that keeps your videos on your own computer, JustRec is built for that. It’s a menu bar app: press stop and a share link is already in your clipboard, the original stays in a library on your Mac, and the shared copy is stored in the EU and deleted when the link expires. It’s not out yet: join the waitlist to hear when it launches.

Loom is a good product, and for some teams it’s still the right one. This page explains why agencies and freelancers look elsewhere, what we do differently, and when you should stay with Loom.

Why people look for a Loom alternative

Three reasons come up again and again, and all three are on Loom’s own pricing and help pages.

The free plan is tight for client work. Loom Starter allows 25 videos per person and screen recordings of up to 5 minutes. Archived videos count toward the 25, and once you reach the limit you can’t create new recordings on Starter.

The price is per user, every month. Loom Business costs $18 per user per month on monthly billing, or $180 per user per year on annual billing. Business + AI is $24 per user per month. For a three-person studio on annual Business billing, that’s $540 a year, every year.

Every video lives in Loom’s cloud. Loom is a cloud library: your recordings, transcripts and comments are stored on its servers. By default a video stays online until someone deletes it. Admins can set public links to expire, but only on Business + AI and Enterprise. Since May 2026 new workspaces can pick data residency in Germany or the United States, but the region is set when the workspace is created and can’t be changed afterwards. Existing workspaces can’t switch yet.

None of this is a flaw for an internal team that wants a shared video archive. It’s a poor fit if most of your videos are a two-minute walkthrough for one client, watched once.

What JustRec does differently

  • Your library is on your Mac

Recordings are MP4 files in Movies/JustRec. Preview, rename, share again or withdraw a link from there.

  • Link copied on stop

Press stop, the video uploads, and the justrec.app link is already in your clipboard.

  • Links that expire

3 days on Lifetime, 30 days on Personal and Team. Then the shared copy is deleted.

  • Stored in the EU

Shared copies live on servers in the EU. The video page has no cookies, analytics or tracking.

  • Subtitles made on your Mac

Speech-to-text runs locally. Your voice is never sent to an external AI.

  • Pay once if you want

Lifetime is €19 once for early birds, then €29, with all 1.x updates.

A local library instead of a cloud one

Your recordings stay on your Mac, in a normal folder. The online copy exists only to be watched. When a client asks for last month’s handover video, you find it in the library and share it again with a new link. We explain the thinking in why your videos should stay on your Mac.

Most client videos have a shelf life of days: feedback on round two of the homepage, a bug that’s fixed next week. With JustRec the link expires on its own and the copy on our servers is deleted, so old videos don’t pile up online. Here’s why expiring links are safer than a permanent library.

Built for sending to clients

Your client clicks the link and watches in any browser, on a laptop or a phone, without an account. Link previews show the title and thumbnail in WhatsApp, Slack and Mail. The page shows who sent the video, how long it is, when the link expires, and subtitles in the language you spoke. If you’ve been sending files by email instead, our guide to sending a large video to a client covers every option.

Privacy you can explain to a client

Subtitles are generated on your Mac, so your voice doesn’t go to a cloud AI. Shared copies are stored in the EU and deleted on expiry. If your clients ask about GDPR, read what EU agencies should check with Loom for the other side of the comparison.

When Loom is still the better choice

Be honest with yourself about how you use video. Stay with Loom if:

  • Your team works in a shared video library. Loom has personal, shared and team libraries and workspace spaces. JustRec keeps a library on each person’s Mac.
  • You want comments and reactions under the video. Loom has them on every plan. JustRec doesn’t; your client replies by email or chat.
  • You need to know who watched. Loom shows viewer insights, and engagement insights on Business. JustRec’s video page has no analytics at all. A “your client watched it” email is planned, not available.
  • You rely on integrations. Loom lists Slack, Jira, Confluence, Notion, GitHub, Gmail and more. JustRec doesn’t integrate with other apps.
  • Someone on the team uses Windows or records from a phone. Loom has apps for both. JustRec is Mac only.
  • You record long training videos or meetings. Loom Business has no recording-time limit. JustRec stops at 10 minutes on Lifetime and 30 minutes on Personal and Team, and doesn’t record meetings.

If none of those matter to you, you’re probably paying for a team platform to send one-off client messages. Compare more options in our list of the best Loom alternatives for Mac.

Getting started

JustRec isn’t released yet. Until it is, the built-in Screenshot toolbar (⌘⇧5) records your screen for free; our guide on how to screen record on Mac covers it step by step, and the comparison with QuickTime and the macOS tools shows what they leave out.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Loom alternative for Mac?

Yes. The Screenshot toolbar built into macOS records your screen for free, but it saves a file instead of giving you a link. Free plans of cloud recorders cap what you can do: Loom Starter, for example, stops screen recordings at 5 minutes.

Does JustRec work on Windows?

No. JustRec is a native macOS app and needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later. If part of your team is on Windows, Loom or another cross-platform recorder will suit you better.

Can my client watch a JustRec video without an account?

Yes. The link opens in any browser on desktop or phone, with no account and no app. The page shows the title, who sent it, the duration, the expiry date and subtitles.

What happens to my video when the link expires?

The shared copy on the EU servers is deleted and the page tells the viewer to ask for a new link. The original stays in the library on your Mac, so you can share it again.

Does JustRec show who watched my video?

No. The video page has no cookies, analytics or tracking. An email when your client watches the video is planned but not available at launch.

When is JustRec available?

JustRec hasn't launched yet. You can join the waitlist and get one email at launch with an early-bird price.
